ARCHAEOLOGICAL Field Technician

Pay Range:

FTEC I $21.50 - FTEC III $42.50/hour

Applied EarthWorks, Inc. (Æ) has several openings for experienced Archaeological Technicians in Northern California for upcoming survey projects from the Bay Area to the California-Oregon border. This work is on-call, as needed, and local candidates are encouraged to apply.

Æ maintains a list for Archaeological Field Technicians in all of our offices throughout California. We offer roles for entry level positions through highly experienced field directors, classified from Field Technician I through Field Technician III.  Advancement from Field Technician to Staff Archaeologist is common for strong performers.

Pay will be appropriate to capabilities and experience. When applicable, expense reimbursement will be provided.

Duties:

Field technicians are responsible for carrying out archaeological excavation, pre-construction field surveys and conducting mitigation monitoring in support of upcoming projects. Duties may also include site testing and evaluation, and data recovery. Local candidates preferred.

Skill Requirements:  

  • Field experience with archaeological survey and/or excavation;

  • Knowledge of and basic operation of GPS technology;

  • Ability to take clear and legible notes as well as strong oral and written communication skills;

  • Physically fit and able to handle strenuous field conditions in sometimes adverse weather. Fieldwork may require hiking on rugged terrain and steep slopes; standing or walking for long periods of time throughout the day; lifting and carrying loads up to 40 pounds; stooping, bending, and kneeling.

  • Valid drivers license / Real ID or passport;

  • Basic background screening for entry onto Department of Defense installations may apply for specific project assignments;

  • Pre-employment drug screening may apply for specific project assignments.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or closely related field. At least 1 year of experience in California archaeology and completion of an archaeology field school required. Ability to confidently drive in “off-road” conditions is a plus. HAZWOPER is also a plus. Applicants must be able to work successfully as a team member. High performers will be considered for additional assignments. Experience with Survey 1-2-3 and ArcCollector a plus.
